PROGRESSIVIST DOCUMENT OF THE WEEK
Bergoglio: We need a ‘new road’ for the Papacy
At an audience granted to the Council of the Secretariat of the Synod of Bishops on June 13, 2013, Pope Bergoglio gave some guidelines for the preparation of the final draft of the document from the last Bishops' Synod that took place in October 2012.
Among the guidelines, he stressed the need to change the role of the Papacy to make it more "synodal." In progressivist jargon, synodality means democracy; so, to be "more synodal" means to be "more democratic." The Pope disregarded the prepared text of his speech and improvised. On its front page at top right, L'Osservatore Romano summarized the improvised speech; on its page 7 it reproduced the official, not read text. The media also spread the unread text. We enlarged the part of the improvised speech that refers to the Papacy, bottom right, and offer to our readers our translation from the Italian, below left in blue. Finally, coming to the question of relations between synodality and the exercise of the ministry of the Bishop of Rome, Pope Francis stressed the great importance of this topic and ensured that it is already a central topic of reflection for the group of eight Prelates [chosen to help Francis govern the Church]. In his opinion, it is necessary to look for a "new road" for synodality to express "its own singularity united to the Petrine ministry." For the Pontiff this is a "great challenge," and he expects a decisive role will be played by the Secretariat of the Synod of Bishops itself. In his conclusion Pope Francis thanked the Council for the work that has been done and invited its members "to go forward with liberty" and "without fear."
