Dancing before the altar - Rome
The Church of San Bernardino da Siena in Rome on Quirinal Hill is the center of a Catholic Chinese community in the city. Its chaplain is Fr. John Chiu, a Franciscan. In September 2003 the Vicariate of Rome, under the direct supervision of its Bishop, the Pope, granted the use of the church for the spiritual benefit of Catholic Chinese immigrants, many from Taiwan. On July 16, 2012, this church hosted dances performed by the Yun-Shiu Dance Group of Taiwan, which traveled to Italy for this show along with others. The photos you see on this page were taken at that evening performance.
There is no doubt that the choreographic display of colors, dresses and forms was artistic and culturally expressive. The great inconvenience, however, is that the performance took place right in front of the Altar and the Tabernacle. The great forgotten in the event was Our Lord Jesus Christ. Also overlooked were the venerable history of that church and the Catholic Prelates and Religious Superiors buried in its floor.
A show performed under the Pope's nose, who is the Bishop of Rome...
Last row, two photos of San Bernardino Church in central Rome.
