Pub Mass in Prague 1

Pub Mass in Prague

On January 29, 2025, Fr. Marek Vacha celebrated a Mass at a pub in Prague, Czech Republic, above. The pub is located in the granary of the Benedictine Brenov Monastery, which has become a commercial establishment open to the public, sixth and seventh rows below.

For the "ecumenical encounter," non-Catholics and Jews, along with Catholics, were invited. The Gospel was read and commented on by an ex-priest Daniel Herman, fourth row below.

At the beginning of the "The Lord in the Tavern," as the Mass was advertised, Fr. Vacha invited those present to help themselves to beer, wine, coffee, snacks and refreshments at their convenience, pointing to the next door for refills.

He also thanked Abbot Prokop Siostrzonek, head of that Monastery, last row, for allowing and approving the event.

At the Communion presumably all present – Catholic or not – went forth to receive the Holy Host, leaving their empty glasses on the tables... In the fifth row we see ex-priest Herman receiving Communion.

The pub Mass raised a storm of protest among Catholics in Prague, which caused the Liturgical Commission of the Bishops Conference to issue a condemnation of that event. This also obliged the Archbishop of Prague, Jan Graubner, on February 15, to dismiss Fr. Vacha from his duties at Most Holy Savior Church, where he was an assistant priest for the youth.

Fr. Marek Vacha continues, however, to be parish priest at the village of Lechovice, and the Bishop of Brno to which the church is subordinate defended him in face of the condemnation.
