De facto women priests advance in Brazil
Under the pretext of the lack of priests, women are increasingly assuming the roles reserved to priests in many places in Brazil. This is the case, for example, of Viviane dos Santos, above, who is officially charged with the duties of reading the Gospel and giving the sermon whenever the priest is absent.For about nine years she has exercised her "ministry" in the Cathedral of St. Anthony, in downtown Nova Iguaçu in the State of Rio de Janeiro.
The headline of a unidentified local newspaper sent by a reader states, above: "In Nova Iguaçu a woman is the priest;" below: "A Change of Habits - Lack of parish priests increases the number of ministers helping at celebrations. Women also give orientation to the faithful."
