Above is a ceremony of Baptism that took place on April 11, 2009 in Holy Family Church, Artesia, in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. Seeing this ritual, you may sense that something is strange. In fact, it is. The Roman Catholic Church does not use immersion in the water to baptize a person.

Although there are three forms permitted for administering Baptism - immersion, infusion and aspersion - and immersion is still used in some Eastern Catholic Rites, in her Roman Rite the Catholic Church uses only infusion (= affusion). This term means that some water is taken from the baptismal font and poured on the forehead of the child or adult, as pictured below first row.

In case of an emergency, a priest or even any layman can baptize another person by taking a small amount of water on his fingers, making the Sign of the Cross on the person's forehead, and saying, "I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost." This is also considered infusion.

Baptism by aspersion (= sprinkling) is very rare. It is believed that St. Peter used this form when he baptized 3,000 persons on Pentecost Day.

The new tendency of the Conciliar Church is to reintroduce the rite of immersion in order to be more like the Protestants, who use this form of Baptism in many of its sects.

This is another ecumenical novelty coming from the Liturgical Reform of Vatican II that we should resist.
