Krambambuli is a German student song that sings the praises of the eponymous krambambuli, a type of mulled wine. The singers here enter an inn, and there pass up food in favor of krambambuli, their favorite drink. To the singers this drink is so enjoyable that anyone who hates it must be offering insult to God who, in His benificence, has gifted mankind with such liqueurs.
Krambambuli was composed by Christoph Friedrich Wedekind in the 18th century. It is here performed by Erich Kunz and the Vienna State Orchestra
Lyrics:
Krambambuli, das ist der titel,
Des tranks, der sich bei uns bewahrt;
Er ist ein ganz probates mittel,
Wenn uns was boses widerfahrt.
Des abends spat, des morgens fruh
Trink ich mein glas krambambuli,
Krambimbambambuli, krambambuli.
Des Abends spat, des morgens fruh
Trink ich mein glas krambambuli,
Krambimbambambuli, krambambuli.
Bin ich im wirtshaus abgestiegen,
Gleich einem großen kavalier,
Dann laß ich brot und braten liegen,
Und greife nach dem pfropfenziehr,
Dann blast der schwager tantari
Zun einem glas krambambuli,
Krambimbambambuli, krambambuli.
Dann blast der schwager tantari
Zun einem glas krambambuli,
Krambimbambambuli, krambambuli.
Reißt mich's im kopf, reißt mich's im magen,
Hab ich zum Essen keine Lust,
Wenn mich die bosen schnupfen plagen,
Hab ich Katarrh auf meiner brust:
Was kummern mich die medici?
Ich trink mein glas krambambuli,
Krambimbambambuli, krambambuli.
Was kummern mich die medici?
Ich trink mein glas krambambuli,
Krambimbambambuli, krambambuli.
Wer wider uns krambambulisten,
Sein hamisch maul zur mißgunst rumpft,
Den halten wir fur keinen christen,
Weil er auf Gottes gabe schimpft,
Ich gab ihm, ob er zeter schrie,
Nicht einen schluck krambambuli,
Krambimbambambuli, krambambuli.
Ich gab ihm, ob er zeter schrie,
Nicht einen schluck krambambuli,
Krambimbambambuli, krambambuli.
English translation:
Krambambuli is the name,
Of the drink, which is preserved with us;
It is a very effective remedy,
If we suffer evil.
In the late evening, in the early morning,
I drink my glass of krambambuli,
Krambimbambambuli, krambambuli.
In the late evening, in the early morning,
I drink my glass of krambambuli,
Krambimbambambuli, krambambuli.
I am staying at the inn,
Like a great cavalier,
Then I'll leave the bread and roasts,
And reach for the corkscrew,
When blows the post-boy tran tan te,
For a glass krambambuli,
Krambimbambambuli, krambambuli.
When blows the post-boy tran tan te,
For a glass krambambuli,
Krambimbambambuli, krambambuli.
If pain in my head, if pain in my stomach,
If I have no desire to eat,
If I am plagued by an evil cold
And have congestion in my chest:
What care I for medics?
I drink my glass of krambambuli,
Krambimbambambuli, krambambuli.
What care I for medics?
I drink my glass of krambambuli,
Krambimbambambuli, krambambuli.
Who opposes us krambambulisten,
His malicious mouth in an envious wrinkle,
He cannot be considered a Christians,
Because he on God's gift curses,
I will give him, if he screamed bloody murder,
not a sip of krambambuli,
Krambimbambambuli, krambambuli.
I will give him, if he screamed bloody murder,
not a sip of krambambuli,
Krambimbambambuli, krambambuli.
